Germany would have faced more than 400,000 new daily coronavirus cases by Christmas if the pace of infections had been allowed to continue, a senior health official said on Tuesday, a day after a new partial lockdown was introduced.

"The (new) measures can brake the spread of the virus," said Lars Schaade, Vice President of the Robert Koch Institute, the leading authority in Germany on the virus.
