Germany ditches strict rules for Brits meaning no quarantine for double jabbed

An outright travel ban for people from the UK flying into Germany will be lifted on Wednesday.

The restrictions, which also applied to people from Portugal, Russia, India and Nepal, are to be relaxed from tomorrow.

Currently travellers from the five countries are banned from entering Germany unless they are residents, in which case they have to quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

From tomorrow visitors who are fully vaccinated will also not be required to quarantine.

Non-vaccinated people will however still be required to quarantine for up to 10 days, with the option to end the period of isolation early with a negative test on the fifth day.

All five countries had been downgraded to "high incidence areas" from "areas of variant concern", the Robert Koch Institute said.

Germany's efforts to minimise travel from the UK was a bid to keep out the highly infectious Delta variant.

The mutant strain is now ripping across Britain and has seen cases shoot up more than 50% in the past seven days, to 178,000 in a week.

In contrast, Germany is currently enduring just over 500 daily Covid cases.

Germany is still on the UK's amber list however, meaning 10 days of self-isolation are required on return from the country.

Several other large European countries have restrictions on British travellers, in addition to the traffic light system still being enforced in the UK.

Under Spanish rules, British travellers to mainland Spain and its islands are allowed to enter the country only if they can prove they've been double jabbed two weeks before arrival and they have a negative coronavirus test.

Those heading to Portugal need to show a negative test and quarantine for two weeks if they haven't had two doses.

Double jabbed Brits must show a negative test to get into France, with the unvaccinated requiring an essential reason to travel - such as a family or medical emergency.

It was rumoured that Boris Johnson was going to signal the relaxation of the traffic light system at his press conference last night.

The expected update - that fully vaccinated Brits would not need to isolate on their return from amber list countries - did not materialise however.

He told the Downing Street press conference: "We will maintain our tough border controls including the red list and recognising the protection afforded by two doses of vaccine, we will work with the travel industry for removing the need for fully vaccinated arrivals to isolate on return from an amber country and the Transport Secretary will provide a further update later this week."
