Germany carnival crash: '15 injured' as car 'deliberately' ploughs into crowd

A car drove around barriers and ploughed into a crowd of revellers at a carnival parade in Germany, leaving at least 15 people injured.

Witnesses say it appeared the silver Mercedes was deliberately driven into spectators, including children, and travelled about 30 metres before finally coming to a stop.

The driver was arrested at the scene in the town of Volkmarsen shortly after the crash happened at about 2.30pm local time.

At least 15 people were injured in the crash, local media reported.

The cause of the incident was under investigation and police declined to say whether it was an accident or a deliberate attack.

A police spokesperson said: "In Volkmarsen, a car drove into the Rose Monday parade.

"According to the first reports, there are several injuries. The police are on site with a large contingent.

"The driver of the car has been arrested by police officers."

Dozens of police officers and paramedics were at the scene.

The force urged local residents not to speculate or spread rumours on social media.

Volkmarsen is located in the state of Hesse, about 75 miles east of Dortmund.

The incident comes just days after a racist gunman killed ten people - nine at shisha bars and his mother at his home - in a terror attack in Hanau, near Frankfurt.

It was one of the worst racist attacks in Germany since World War Two.
