Germanwings flight makes emergency landing as cockpit fills with smoke

Pilots were forced to perform an emergency landing after smoke filled the cockpit of a Germanwings flight from Dresden to Düsseldorf on Monday evening.

There were no injuries after the landing at Düsseldorf airport, a Germanwings spokesman told German newspaper BILD.

Flight 4U9023 was carrying 142 passengers and five crew, all of whom were able to disembark the plane after the landing.

Pilots reacted immediately after noticing smoke in the cockpit and landed the plane at 9.50pm accompanied by fire crew.

Photographs from the scene showed fire-fighters wearing breathing apparatus entering the plane, English language news site thelocal.de reports.

The source of the smoke remains unclear. A spokesman for Germanwings said they had no further information on the cause of the fire, however the report in BILD suggests the smoke may have come from the luggage compartment.
