German towns forced to re-impose lockdown after coronavirus rates spike

Towns in Germany have been forced to bring back lockdown measures after a new spike in infections.

States who eased restrictions had agreed that they would re-impose them if the number of cases hit 50 per 100,000.

This has now happened in North Rhine-Westphalia, where 150 workers at a slaughterhouse in Coesfeld tested positive for the virus.

It brought the state's infection rate to 61 per 100,000, and means other planned moves to ease restrictions now cannot go ahead.

The UK and other governments across the world will be looking to Germany to see how it copes with easing the lockdown after Chancellor Angela Merkel gave the green light to the country's 16 states.

Two towns in the state of Thuringia, in eastern Germany, are also being put back on lockdown after recoding a rate of 80 infections per 100,000 people.

Chief administrator Martina Schweinsburg, said:  "To be clear: We're not going to put the entire district in quarantine just two small towns were particularly affected."

Tory MP George Eustice: “It’s not true we weren’t prepared”

Restaurants and gyms in Germany will be allowed to reopen on Monday, except in the areas that have seen a spike.

Boris Johnson is set to address the public to reveal his "road map" to bring the country out of lockdown.

Downing Street has reiterated that the Prime Minister will exercise “maximum caution” when he announces lockdown changes on Sunday.

Mr Johnson’s official spokesman said: “The PM is clear that we are going to adopt an approach of maximum caution.

“I think that is obviously reflected in comments the First Ministers have made in public.”
