German nurse Neils Hoegel admits killing 100 patients in his care

A German nurse has admitted to killing 100 patients who were in his care.

On the first day of his trial, Neils Hoegel, 41, admitted he killed patients at two hospitals in the country.

He told the court that the charges against him were accurate. The charges stem from his time at two hospitals in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst from 1999 to 2005.

The victims were aged between 34 and 96.

Mr Hoegel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders.

During that trial, he confessed to intentionally bringing about cardiac crises in some 90 patients in Delmenhorst because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them.

He then admitted to killing patients in Oldenburg.

Authorities investigated hundreds of deaths and exhumed bodies of former patients.

Police have said that some of the deaths could have been prevented had health officials alerted authorities.

Judge Sebastian Buehrmann started the trial with a minute's silence for the victims.

He said: "All of their relatives deserve their memory be honoured. We will make every effort to seek the truth."

Christian Marbach, a representative of the patients' relatives said: "We have fought for four years for this trial and expect Hoegel to be convicted of another 100 killings.

"The aim is for Hoegel to stay in custody as long as possible."

The trial is set to last until May.
