German masters in the spotlight

Pro Musica Ensemble will perform two masterpieces by two great German composers during "The Two Bs" concert at Siam Society, Asok Road, on May 28 at 7pm.

Presented by Silpakorn University's Faculty of Music and the Fund for Classical Music Promotion under the Patronage of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the programme will feature Beethoven's String Trio In E-flat Major, Op 3 and Brahms' String Quintet No.2 In G Major, Op 111.

The first piece was written for violin, viola and cello in 1795 after Beethoven had completed two years of study in Vienna with Josef Haydn. It contains six movements unfolding in the style of a divertimento, and is for the most part light and witty with a central adagio that brings a certain weight and gravitas to this early joyful chamber-music calling card from one of history's most celebrated composers.

The second piece is one of the towering masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire. Written in 1890, it is in four movements, opening with a shockingly dramatic first theme and ending with a raucous Hungarian-style dance.

Pro Musica Ensemble comprises Leo Phillips (violin), Rueychai Saengow (violin), Chizuko Ishikawa (viola) and Tasana Nagavajara (viola). This is the first time they will be joined by Clive Greensmith on cello.

The guest cellist is a former member of the world-renowned Tokyo String Quartet who has given over 100 performances each year in the most prestigious international venues and has collaborated with international artists.

Tickets cost 600 baht (500 baht for Siam Society members and 100 baht for students). Call 02-661-6470--3.
