German man Tobias Pick appears in court charged with Boxing Day murder in Launceston

The Wellington Street house was examined by police.

A German national charged with murdering a woman in Launceston on Boxing Day has appeared briefly before a magistrate.

Tobias Pick, 27, has been charged with one count of murder and one count of stealing over the death of Jingai Zhang.

The 49-year-old woman was found dead inside a bedroom of a house on Wellington Street about 8:30pm on Saturday night.

Mr Pick appeared in front of a magistrate in Devonport via video link from police custody in Launceston.

He was represented by duty solicitor Jessica Stewart, who asked for the case to be adjourned without plea.

Mr Pick was remanded in custody until his next appearance in the Launceston Magistrates Court on January 21.

In a statement on Tuesday, Tasmania Police said Mr Pick was from Germany and had been in Australia on a working visa for at least several months.

Ms Zhang was an Australian permanent resident of Chinese origins.

"Our thoughts are with the relatives of Ms Zhang, who have been notified of her death," Detective Sergeant Joe Riley said in a statement.

A witness, police and paramedics tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Ms Zhang.

A 25-year-old woman also arrested in relation to the alleged murder was later released.
