The Charité University Hospital (Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin) opened a new department that focuses on investigating the potential consequences of climate change on health. The renowned Berlin-based hospital said Monday that Dr. Sabine Gabrysch, professor of Epidemiology, will head the new department.
According to the hospital, the new department comes as part of cooperation with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and that Prof. Gabrysch will head the climate flexibility unit, aiming at focusing her research on the developing and developed countries. The German scientist said she plans to concentrate her studies on nutrition, the German News Agency reported.
Gabrysch, who formerly worked at the Heidelberg University Hospital, said this research field has so far studied heat waves and tropical germ proliferation, yet, the food safety is also at risk. For instance, if the recurrent waves of soil drought led to malnutrition among pregnant women, their children may suffer from incurable health problems later.
"At the same time, I plan to examine the impact of the mutual benefits strategy and its solutions, and extend it. Those solutions are beneficial for humans and the environment alike," noted Gabrysch.
According to the professor, these solutions start with agriculture methods and include the establishment of cities that are friendly for pedestrians and bikers.
