German Gymnasium reveals huge floral tribute to late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld

Style-conscious restaurant German Gymnasium has revealed a spectacular floral tribute to late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The King’s Cross hotspot is now home to a two-and-a-half-metre mannequin statue by McQueen’s florists at the centre of its Grand Café, which is covered in around 3000 pink flowers, and sits alongside both a blossoming tree and a metal wire sculpture of Lagerfeld himself.

German-born Lagerfeld is depicted wearing his iconic dark sunglasses and high white collar, his face outlined with iron wiring. The mannequin’s floral dress is based on a design created by Lagerfeld for Chanel's Spring Summer 2017 collection, which was modelled by Lily-Rose Depp at Paris Fashion Week.

The legendary designer passed away in February this year at the age of 85. He enjoyed a six decade career in the fashion industry, which began when he became an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Until his death, Lagerfeld was the creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own eponymous label.

Lagerfeld will also be celebrated by the Mittel-European restaurant in the form of a limited edition cocktail named the Karl. The pink-coloured drink has been designed by German Gymnasium’s bar team and is made with Moët & Chandon Rosé, Brockman’s gin, Lillet rosé and house strawberry liqueur. The cocktail is served in a crystal flute, priced at £15.50.

German Gymnasium is situated inside the converted former quarters of the first purpose-built gymnasium in the country, which opened in 1865 as the home of the German Gymnastics Society.

The Karl Lagerfeld tribute is now on display at German Gymnasium, King’s Boulevard, King’s Cross, N1C 4BU. For more information, visit germangymnasium.com
