German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze called upon Germans to drink more tap water instead of bottled water in order to promote environment and climate protection.

Speaking to the German News Agency, Schulze said water from the tap in Germany would be "flawless", adding that drinking tap water saves money, energy and unnecessary packaging.

The minister, also a Social Democratic (SPD) politician, advised people on the streets and in forests to drink water fountains, noting this water is a "healthy and an environmental friendly alternative to the many disposable water bottles that people carry around with them every day."

The German environmental ministry is promoting tap water in homes in partnership with the " A Tip: Tap" association.

The association oversees a project aimed at maintaining drinking water in order to protect climate. The ministry supports the project with €1.3 million, to help " switch from bottled to drinking water from the tap in order to reduce CO2 emissions and plastic waste," the Ministry of the Environment said in a statement.

The project also focuses on spreading information to raise citizens' awareness of the importance of tap water, fountains, and other resources that allow them to fill their own bottles.
