Your correspondent Josh Mackay (The ups and downs of toilet-seat etiquette, 20 January) might be encouraged to know that, on the vexed issue of pointing percy at the porcelain, the Germans at least are not taking it sitting down. A court in Düsseldorf last week ordered a landlord to return his tenant’s, ahem, deposit in full. It had been alleged that, in favouring the seat-up position, the tenant had caused €1,900-worth of damage to the marble floor of the bathroom through his apparent lack of accuracy. However, the court ruled that all tenants should enjoy the right to urinate from a standing position.
