German Ambassador: Chancellor's Visit to Saudi Arabia Seeks to Diversify Partnership

German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dieter Lamle (Yazeed al-Samrani)

German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dieter Lamle said Chancellor Olaf Scholz's first visit to Saudi Arabia was fruitful and further deepened cooperation and the strategic partnership between the two countries politically and economically.

In a press conference in Riyadh on Sunday, Lamle announced that Riyadh and Berlin agreed to manufacture green and blue hydrogen in the Kingdom and then export it to Germany, transfer technology, and exchange experiences in the fields of artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and education.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the German Chancellor exchanged views on many political and economic issues, including ways to strengthen bilateral relations.

The talks dealt with international issues and ways to solve the region's problems, said the Ambassador, denying that the energy problem in Europe due to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis is the main reason for this visit.

Both countries addressed cooperation in green and blue hydrogen, said Lamle, noting that the efforts between the two countries in this field are moving towards collaboration in energy.

Berlin developed modern technology in the field of hydrogen and intended, along with Saudi Arabia, to jointly invest in it.

The diplomat announced that Berlin wants to transfer technology to Saudi Arabia to produce hydrogen in the Kingdom and export it to Germany between 2026 and 2030.

In March 2021, the German Ministry of Economy and the Saudi Ministry of Finance signed a memorandum of understanding to establish this partnership in the field of hydrogen.

The talks between Saudi and German officials also addressed strengthening bilateral relations in economy and trade, said the Ambassador, explaining that efforts and deals should become a partnership that includes the exchange of knowledge and experiences in technology.

He pointed out that the Chancellor's visit to Saudi Arabia is the first step in laying the cornerstone for the new phase of cooperation between the two countries.

Lamle explained that the Kingdom is a leading country in the Arab world and a G20 member, which means it is involved in solving any issue in the region.

The Ambassador asserted that the two countries are united by their will to achieve stability in the region, settle the conflict in Yemen, and resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Germany stands by Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, said the Ambassador, asserting that Berlin will continue to support Kyiv to prevent the war from leading to famine and rising energy prices.

As for Iran, Lamle indicated that the talks between the Saudi and German officials confirmed that Iran poses a regional threat, noting that the two sides are aware of the danger of Tehran's hegemony in the region.

He warned of the dangers of Iran agreeing to the nuclear deal and not abiding by its terms.
