Gerard Pique says "If I speak, I will explode" as Barcelona chief admits Liverpool regret

It's obvious Gerard Pique doesn't see eye to eye with former Barcelona chief Josep Maria Bartomeu after he opened up on his controversial tenure at the Nou Camp.

The 58-year-old was the club president for six years between 2014 and 2020, before leaving them in financial ruins.

And Bartomeu admits the club should have rebuilt after their Champions League collapse against Liverpool in 2019 as Jurgen Klopp's men overcame a 3-0 deficit at Anfield.

He told Marca: "Not assessing after Liverpool's defeat that a change would have to be made was a mistake. He had to have made a generational change.

"I listened to the players and I was wrong. We were going to the limit economically and the pandemic caught us all by surprise."

And Pique had to refrain from reacting to Bartomeu's interview as he would "explode" in rage if he did comment on it.

He said: "I read on Twitter that Bartomeu has spoken again. I'm not going to say anything, because I will explode if I speak."

Bartomeu also mentioned Barcelona's big-money signings such as Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann that have failed to hit the mark.

He added: "Some of those we have done have not met expectations, Players who have cost a lot of money (Coutinho, Dembelé), but these things happen in football. When these two players were signed, they were applauded by everyone.

"Coutinho came because Iniesta was leaving. He was the best in the Premier League. Dembele came because of Neymar's departure. The parameters, according to specialists, are 50% correct and incorrect.

"As for Griezmann, the technicians asked and insisted for a year. They considered it essential, especially because Luis Suárez was injured a lot that season. He was a different striker and a world star, and a team player. "

Bartomeu revealed Barcelona had tabled an offer to sign Kylian Mbappe when he left Monaco but opted to sign Ousmane Dembele instead.

He said: "His signing was on the table, but the technicians preferred Dembélé because they wanted a player to open the field."

Lionel Messi's shock exit to Paris Saint-Germain was also discussed as Bartomeu insists he did everything he could for him to extend his contract in 2020.

He added: "His departure has been a problem. We are a buying club and not a seller. I fought a lot in the summer of 2020 for him to continue, and now that he wanted to stay, he has had to go. I could not allow Messi to go to a Champions rival.

"His case is different from that of Neymar, Figo or Rivaldo. It is evident that he was the highest-paid player in the world and by far.

"In July 2020 I reached an agreement with Messi to renew two years, but then everything broke. We will have to ask Messi why "
