Gerard Houllier explains three reasons why Liverpool ended Premier League title wait

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has pinpointed three factors that helped the Reds win their first Premier League title.

The Frenchman was previously in charge at Anfield but the best he could manage was a second place finish in 2002.

Jurgen Klopp's side have been relentless in their pursuit of the title having missed out by a point last term.

The German opted not to make any major signings last summer, instead sticking with the team that won the Champions League.

And Houllier felt that maintaining continuity was a major plus having already added stars like Alisson and Virgil van Dijk previously.

He told the Liverpool Echo : "One, they've been together for two years to work, train and play. There is a tactical harmony. The team is coming to full maturity now.

"Second, the buys of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson were pivotal in the title quest. When those two came into the team, it was different. They won the Champions League last year and that tells you everything."

Van Dijk and Allison are Liverpool's two most expensive signings of all-time, but both have repaid the club's faith.

Klopp had a huge rebuild job on his hands when he arrived almost five years ago.

But he has steadily built his side and Houllier has highlighted the former Borussia Dortmund boss has another major reason behind their success.

He added: "And three, Jurgen Klopp. He gives so much enthusiasm and confidence to the whole squad. The team would go through hell and fire for him."

The German has already spoken about the desire to go again next term and retain their title.

He said: "We will not defend the title next season; we'll attack the next one.

"I have learned when you think you have reached the pinnacle, you are already on the way down."
