Gerard Butler's highly anticipated sequel to the disaster film 'Greenland' is finally moving forward. Titled 'Greenland: Migration,' the film is set to begin production in April, according to Variety. Butler will reprise his role as John Garrity, a structural engineer, while Morena Baccarin will also return as his wife, Allison. The sequel will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who helmed the first installment, and written by Chris Sparling, the original writer.

In the first film, 'Greenland,' John Garrity and his family attempt to escape Atlanta after a comet threatens to destroy the planet. As they face numerous challenges and are separated, they must find a way to reunite while dealing with the catastrophic events caused by the comet. The sequel takes place after the comet has devastated Earth, forcing the Garrity family to embark on a dangerous journey across what remains of Europe in search of a new home.

Despite the success of the first film, the sequel faced obstacles during its development. Co-producer STX Entertainment, which acquired the rights to 'Greenland 2' for $75 million, encountered financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy protection. However, the company was later acquired by the Najafi Companies, allowing the project to move forward.

'Greenland: Migration' is being produced by Thunder Road Pictures, G-BASE, CineMachine, and Anton. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Sébastien Raybaud, John Zois, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, and Brendon Boyea are serving as producers. STX Entertainment executives Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson, and Sam Brown are also involved as executive producers, along with Ric Roman Waugh.

Sébastien Raybaud, co-producer from Anton, expressed excitement about the sequel and the return of the original cast and crew. He stated, 'We are thrilled to have Gerard, Morena, and Ric back on board for 'Greenland: Migration' to show the audiences what happened next to the Garrity family.' The film is expected to captivate audiences just as the first installment did.

Anton and STX Entertainment are co-producing and co-financing the project, with STX handling global distribution. The original film, released during the pandemic in 2020, grossed over $50 million at the box office. Fans of the disaster genre can look forward to the continuation of the gripping story in 'Greenland: Migration,' as the Garrity family faces new challenges in their quest for survival.
