For all the talk about revenge games and jersey numbers and chemistry, in the end, Gerald McCoy chose the team he thinks will give him the best chance to win. The highly sought after free agent defensive tackle has signed with the Carolina Panthers, instantly giving them one of the league’s most intimidating defensive lines.
In his introductory press conference with his new team, McCoy said every ounce of him feels like Carolina is a contender, per Field Yates at ESPN.
McCoy spent the first nine seasons of his career playing for the antithesis of a contender. Tampa never made the playoffs once and finished in the NFC South’s cellar all but two of those years.
The Panthers still have an uphill battle to catch up with the Saints, who have won the division the last two years.
Adding McCoy certainly brings them one large step closer, though.
