Geraint Thomas' 'surreal' chat with Prince William while he picks up OBE

Geraint Thomas said it was "surreal" to share with the Duke of Cambridge as the Welsh cycling hero collected his OBE.

The 2018 Tour de France winner and double Olympic champion was recognised for his services to cycling at a royal investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, October 22.

Thomas, who grew up on the outskirts of Cardiff, received his honour from William and later told telling PA: "It was an honour to meet him."

He added: "It was surreal."

Thomas, who also picked up the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2018, said the pair discussed parenting and William asked him questions about his baby boy who was born three weeks ago.

At the start of October, Thomas shared the happy news that he and wife Sara, who celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary that same week, had .

In a post on Instagram, he said: "Yesterday was our four year wedding anniversary and earlier this week we welcomed another Thomas into the family. Sa and our little boy doing great."

He didn't reveal the name or where the baby was born.

Discussing his conversation with the William, Thomas said: "He asked how the sleepless nights were going.

"He said their first one took a while for his sleep to kick in."

He added: "You don't really know what to expect, but to chat to him about the rugby and my baby was surreal."

The cyclist added that it was "humbling" to collect his OBE.

Others to collect honours on Tuesday included Silverback Films co-founder Alastair Fothergill, production designer Karen Christie, author Sarah Waters, photographer Terence O'Neill, and wildlife conservationist Jonathan Vaughan.

Among those knighted on Tuesday were Rolls-Royce chairman Sir Ian Davis for his service to business and Sir Frederick Hazlewood, also for his service to business.
