Geraint Thomas crashes at Tour de France in pile-up that snaps teammate's bike in half

Geraint Thomas crashed at the Tour de France in a pile-up that saw a teammate's bike snapped in half.

The defending champion was involved in a pile-up with a number of team-mates on a bend close to the end of stage eight to Saint Etienne.

Canadian Michael Woods sparked a chain reaction when he slid off on a tight right-hander, taking down Thomas, his Team Ineos lieutenant Gianni Moscon and holding up others.

As the pile of bodies and bikes left on the road was untangled, the bike of Gianni Moscon could be seen snapped in half, leaning against a wall next to the road.

Thomas appeared unhurt and was able to remount his own bike - which bears No.1 in honour of his victory last year - and eventually rejoin a depleted peloton after a frantic chase.

He caught all his main rivals bar home favourites Thibaut Pinot and Julian Alaphilippe.

The pair had broken clear before Thomas regained contact with what remained of the peloton and opened up a 20sec gap before the finish.

However, they were unable to catch Belgium strongman Thomas de Gendt, who was the sole survivor of a day-long breakaway.

Thomas finished 10th on the stage after leading out the sprint but voiced his frustration afterwards.

When time bonuses were taken into account, the 33-year-old conceded 28sec to Pinot and 24sec to Alaphilippe.

"I'm fine, but it's just frustrating, obviously. It was at a key moment in the race," said Thomas.

"'Woodsy' (Woods of EF Education First) crashed and just took out Gianni and me. I just got tangled up in Gianni's bike and took a bit of time to get going.

"I caught up with the group on the climb but I was kind of gassed for a bit from the effort.

"I was annoyed and frustrated but, at the same time, to come back like I did shows my form.

"I just didn’t want to give unnecessary time away. Alaphilippe and Pinot are definitely the guys to watch but, if I hadn’t crashed, I could have followed – and it’s a different story then."

Alaphilippe regained the leader’s yellow jersey from Giulio Ciccone. He leads the Italian by 23sec with Pinot climbing to third at 53sec.

New Zealander George Bennett is fourth at 1min 10sec with Thomas fifth at 1min 12sec and his Colombian teammate Egan Bernal fifth a further two seconds behind.

Thomas is among the favourites to clinch a second Tour de France title, with his main rivals expected to be Pinot and Bernal.
