Geraint Thomas cleared for Tour de France after injury scare following crash

Geraint Thomas was cleared on Tuesday night to defend the Yellow Jersey despite being taken to hospital after crashing in Switzerland.

Britain's Tour de France champion suffered a cut above his right eye, multiple abrasions and heavy bruising after an accident involving Kazakh rider Andrey Zeits.

Thomas withdrew from the Tour of Switzerland after the smash, around 20 miles from the end of stage four.

But following team-mate Chris Froome's frightening 40mph smash last week, which ruled the four-times Tour de France winner out of a bid for a record-equalling fifth title, Thomas was given the all-clear.

Thomas said: “I landed on my shoulder and my face – there was quite a bit of blood.

"You've always got to be cautious with a head injury and whilst I was keen to carry on, the doctors made the righr decision to pull me out of the race.

“Clearly it's a small setback for my Tour de France preparations but there's still plenty of time before we start in Brussels.”

Thomas is due to play the leading role for Team Ineos - previously Team Sky - after team-mate Chris Froome was ruled out of the event, which gets underway on July 6.

Froome collided with a wall in a high-speed training crash which saw him suffer a small fracture to his neck, a broken right femur, broken ribs and a fractured hip.

He is set to be out of the saddle for at least six months and spend around six months recovering in hospital.

Thomas has fortunately emerged without such serious damage after a nightmare week for the team which has narrowly avoided complete disaster.
