Ger Aylward becomes latest Kilkenny hurler to retire ahead of 2021 season

Ger Aylward has become the latest Kilkenny hurler to announce his inter-county retirement.

The forward has called time on his career with the Cats at the age of just 28, having won two All-Ireland medals with the Black and Amber.

Announcing his decision on social media, he said: "Would just like to take this opportunity to thank family and friends for the support over the past 7 years it was an honour to wear the black and amber time to call it a day.

"Thanks for the memories."

The Glenmore clubman made his debut for Brian Cody's side in 2013 and was part of the teams that won All-Ireland titles in 2014 and 2015.

Aylward's decision comes after stalwart Paul Murphy announced his retirement yesterday.

A member of the Defence Forces, the Danefort hurler made his senior championship debut for the Cats in the Walsh Cup 2009 and failed to make Cody's League panel.

But after winning an Intermediate All-Ireland the following year, he was recalled to the senior panel for the 2011 season.

After playing in both corner-back positions that summer as Kilkenny won the Leinster and All-Ireland crowns, Murphy picked up the first of four All-Star awards.

Kilkenny lost their provincial crown the following year but retained the Liam MacCarthy Cup as Murphy was nominated for Hurler of the Year.
