Georgios Samaras describes Celtic years as 'pinnacle' of his career

Former Celtic hero Georgios Samaras insists his time in Glasgow's East End was the best period of his career.

The Greek attacker joined the Hoops from Manchester City in 2008 and netted 71 goals in 243 games.

He also won a total of seven trophies during his seven years in Scotland - namely, four league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.

As well as the impressive amount of silverware, Samaras often produced big performances in Europe as Neil Lennon's side upset the odds and bigger teams in the Champions League numerous times.

Although he spent time in England both before and after his time at Parkhead, as well as enjoying stints playing in Spain, Turkey and Saudi Arabia after his time with Celtic, there is no doubt where his heart lies in terms of the former employer he loves the most.

Samaras, who has recently been appointed vice-president of his local club OFI Crete, said: "I enjoyed my time at Manchester City, but I was then able to go to a magnificent club like Celtic.

"Basically, Celtic were the pinnacle of my football career. I spent seven years there and had a great deal of success.

"I felt very loved by everyone in Glasgow. It was a relationship of affection for both parties and for many years, which is something very nice.

"People called me an idol there, but the truth is that I do not like those words. It was a very happy time for me personally and professionally and I gave Celtic 100 per cent.

"If I managed to add something to the history of Celtic, then great. If I didn't, then that's fine too.

"I still love the club and they will always be in my heart."
