Georgios Giakoumakis transfer boost for Celtic as Werder Bremen hint at signing race defeat

Werder Bremen are already looking at alternatives to Celtic target Georgios Giakoumakis.

Record Sport revealed earlier this week the 2. Bundesliga side had matched the Parkhead club's offer for the highly-rated VVV Venlo striker.

Bremen held face-to-face talks with the Greek forward this week but head of football Clemens Fritz did not project much optimism when asked about Giakoumakis.

The 26-year-old, who scored 26 goals for VVV despite their relegation last season, is weighing up which club he wants to sign for and already spoken to Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou over a move to the Premiership.

And now, in a potential boost for Celtic, Fritz hinted Bremen could suffer disappointment.

He said: "Our financial resources are limited and it is important to use them in the best possible way.

"We have to be realistic and accept that other clubs can outbid us for wages.

"But it's good to report that we are no longer forced to sell players and we have room to move in the transfer market now.

"However, it's important to point out that we are not so naive as to deal with just one signing target. We have a list of other targets too.

"All I can tell you is that Georgios enjoyed his tour of our club very much.

"He liked Bremen a lot."
