Georgios Giakoumakis to Celtic transfer 'still on' despite last minute Werder Bremen bid

Celtic are still the frontrunners to sign VVV-Venlo hitman Georgios Giakoumakis after German side Werder Bremen had a bid thrown out, according to a report.

Ange Postecoglou wants a new striker before the transfer window closes as he wants a dependable presence up top.

Odsonne Edouard's head appears to have been turned by transfer speculation while neither Leigh Griffiths or Albian Ajeti have convinced.

It's left Kyogo Furuhashi to lead the line but Celtic want a new out and out striker before the window closes in less than two weeks.

OH Leuven's Thomas Henry had been linked but it appears he will join Gent instead.

Giakoumakis emerged as an alternative earlier this week and news of Celtic's interest has spread far and wide. Greek outlet Sportime feel they remain the frontrunners - despite Werder Bremen offering €2m (£1.7m) plus add-ons for his services.

They claim current club VVV are holding out for a bid closer to €3m for the player who was top scorer in the Eredivisie last season despite their relegation.

Giakoumakis has made it clear he plans to leave this summer as he said in an interview with the club's YouTube channel: "I don't know the future but there is a little bit of pressure now.

"I have some proposals in my head that I have to think, I have to take a decision and I think this will end up really soon.

"Of course, we are in the last days of the transfer window, I have to decide.

"I have to decide and choose one option which I have in my hands."
