Georgios Giakoumakis Celtic transfer talks begin as Ange Postecoglou leans on Greek connection

Celtic are in talks to sign Georgios Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo.

The Greek striker was the top scorer in the Eredivise last year and Ange Postecoglou has been leaving in his Greek heritage to persuade the hit man to make the move to Celtic Park, reports the Daily Record.

Postecoglou called the striker in person and shared his vision for him in his native tongue as he looks to strengthen his striking options.

Giakoumakis hit 26 goals in 30 appearances last term despite Venlo being relegated from the Dutch top flight at the end of the season.

And it's understood a fee of as little as £2.5million could secure his services.

VVV director of football Stan Valckx said: “We still assume Jako (Giakoumakis) will be sold soon for the amount we have in mind.

“It has gotten noisier in the last few weeks, we are getting more and more calls.”

Europa League football could prove tempting to the 26-year-old, who would follow in the footsteps of compatriot and namesake Georgios Samaras in pulling on the Hoops.

Landing Giakoumas could pave the way for Celtic to finally cash in on Odsonne Edouard as well. A £20million bid from Brighton was knocked back last month, with the Scottish Premiership club waiting a bigger chunk of the fee paid up front.

Edouard is in the final year of his deal at Parkhead and is expected to follow Kris Ajer out of the door before the end of the transfer window.
