Georginio Wijnaldum refuses to answer questions about Liverpool future or extending contract

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has passed up the opportunity to clear up his future at the club.

Over the summer he was rumoured to be on the wishlist for Barcelona, with new boss Ronald Koeman since then confirming he had hoped to sign him.

Ultimately, he stayed at Anfield and is now in the final 10 months of his contract - meaning that come January he’ll be able to speak to other overseas clubs if he wishes.

Asked on the international break about his Anfield future and whether he was in talks over an extension with the club, Wijnaldum opted against revealing anything either way.

“I can't say anything about that,” he told Het Perool.

"Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don't they answer?

“I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”

The Dutch midfielder has just been made captain of the national team in the long-term absence of regular skipper Virgil van Dijk, his Liverpool club-mate who faces a season on the sidelines through injury.

And the Reds’ defence has been further decimated with news that Joe Gomez has also suffered a serious injury in training with England.

Wijnaldum’s position in the team was thought to be under threat with the arrival of Thiago Alcantara, but the No. 5 has played the full 90 minutes in seven of Liverpool’s eight Premier League games so far.
