Georgia women’s tennis knocks off UNC in epic clash for 2019 ITA Championship

The No. 5 Georgia women’s tennis team captured its sixth National Championship on Tuesday, after defeating No. 3 North Carolina in an epic clash out west.

After upsetting No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 1 Stanford earlier in the week, the Lady Bulldogs were bound for battle with the Lady Tar Heels on Tuesday in Seattle.

A battle it was, with both teams deadlocked 3-3 before one final match.

Katarina Jokic (UGA) and Makenna Jones (UNC) had the final say in who would be taking home the trophy.

Jones (UNC) won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreak before Jokic (UGA) took the second outright, 7-5.  The final set between the two, which was for all of the marbles, ended deadlocked at 6-6.

However, Jokic came up clutch for Georgia, winning the tiebreak 7-2.  Not only did this win her the set but also the match and the matchup outright.

The Lady Bulldogs are now the 2019 ITA National Champions, after knocking off North Carolina 4-3.
