Georgia track signee Matthew Boling on what events he’ll compete in at UGA

In late June, Georgia signee Matthew Boling received news that he had won the Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Player of the Year Award.

On Tuesday night, Boling was in Los Angeles to accept the award, where Gatorade athletes Todd Gurley and Sony Michel were also in attendance.

Boling, a graduate of Strake Jesuit in Houston, Texas, is regarded as the fastest high school sprinter of all-time. In April, Boling accomplished something no other high schooler has ever done in the 100m – set an all-time all conditions best of 9.98 seconds.

In addition, he won another state title in the long jump, another in the 4×400 relay and added USA Track & Field U20 titles in the 100m and 200m to his long list of achievements.

Prior to his senior year of high school, Boling mainly competed in the 400m and the long jump. That could change when he gets to Georgia.

“I think the long jump, but probably not the 400. Maybe on a relay. It would be a big task to go 100, 200, 400 then long jump,” Boling told UGAWire when asked if he will compete in those two events in college.

For those wondering, Boling will not miss constantly running the 400m.

“The 400 isn’t exactly a fun event. Maybe once in a while it’d be fun, but running the 400 every week is not fun,” Boling said with a laugh.

Boling, whose passport is rather full for an incoming college freshman, will add another stamp next week when he heads to Costa Rica to compete in the Pan American U20 Athletics Championships.
