Georgia Tennant told she wasn't 'convincing partner' for husband David by casting director

Georgia Tennant has said she was told she was not a "convincing partner" for her own husband David Tennant by a casting director.

David, 49, and Georgia, 36, have been married for nine years and share five children together.

However, in an interview with Radio Times, Georgia revealed how the pair had faced resistance to working together on-screen.

Georgia said: "Nobody seemed to want to let me do it. For one part I was told by a casting director that I wasn't a convincing partner for him…

"I was like, ‘But we’re married. With quite a few kids!’ So, basically, every actor who could possibly play the part would have to be eliminated in order for me to be allowed to play his wife…"

The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic appears to have been the unlikely key to the pair working together as they appear alongside each other in sitcom Staged.

The series follows fictionalised versions of David Tennant and Michael Sheen as they attempt to rehearse a play, Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author, over Zoom.

The second run sees the actors see the US try to remake Staged and the actors having to see their own roles recast in the show.

Thankfully, the real-life Mrs Tennant did not have to see another actress play her husband's fictionalised wife, with Georgia playing the part in Staged too.

"I don’t think this is something we would have imagined we'd have done," added David to the magazine.

The pair previously met when working together on Doctor Who when Georgia played 'The Doctor's Daughter' in a one-off episode in 2008 to David's Tenth Doctor.

Coincidentally, Georgia is the daughter of Peter Davison, who was the Fifth Doctor in the history of Doctor Who.

The couple married in 2011 and have five children together: Ty, 18, Olive, nine, Wilfred, seven, Doris, five, and baby Birdie.

Ty is Georgia's son from a previous relationship who David has formally adopted.

Staged season two is available now on BBC iPlayer and airs weekly on Mondays on BBC One.
