Georgia Tech switches ticket strategy for UGA football game

In November, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will host the Georgia Bulldogs in the final game of the regular season for both teams. This year, Georgia Tech is changing up its method of selling tickets for this game specifically.

Instead of selling tickets at a flat price, Tech will adjust prices based on the demand of the tickets, which mirrors the way that secondary ticket markets like StubHub work.

“Really, it’s about just having your finger on the pulse of supply and demand and how that affects pricing to make sure we’re accurately pricing and moving tickets at an optimum price,” said Mike Castle, Tech’s assistant athletic director for ticket sales and operations, per the AJC.

Previously, Tech has noticed that many fans of teams like Georgia or Clemson would buy ticket packages (which had been the only option available before now) and only attend that game while selling the rest on secondary markets, which drove down the value of the tickets that Tech was selling firsthand. Tech hopes that their new method will bring in more direct profit on the tickets they sell.

“I could see (prices) changing daily, especially if tickets are moving quickly,” Castle said.

It’s an interesting approach, and it remains to be seen if it will pay off for the Jackets (no pun intended).
