Georgia Stanway apologises after red card in Manchester derby and reveals she's been the victim of online abuse

Georgia Stanway has apologised after being sent off during the WSL Manchester derby on Saturday, but also revealed she’s been the victim of online abuse following her dismissal.

The Man City forward received her marching orders in the first half after a poor challenge on Leah Galton.

Despite being a woman down, City took the lead through Khadija Shaw, however United seized control of the game; scoring twice after the break courtesy of goals from Lucy Staniforth and Alessia Russo.

However, City fought back to salvage a point through Ellen White’s equaliser.

Taking to social media on Sunday, Stanway apologised for her red card, but insisted the sending-off didn’t excuse the kind of online abuse that she’d received.

“I want to apologise for the sending off in yesterday’s Manchester Derby.

“Everyone who knows me knows I’m passionate and competitive.

“There was absolutely no malice intended and I’m glad Leah was okay and able to carry on with the game.

“A huge thank you to my Man City teammates for the support and effort to secure a point.

“And to both sets of fans for creating an unbelievable atmosphere, I made a mistake and hope everyone can accept my apology but I shouldn’t have to log into social media and find myself subjected to all sorts of abusive messages - remember we are all human and mistakes happen.”
