Georgia’s top defensive targets for 2021; can UGA land three 5-star DBs?

Georgia football wrapped up a 2020 recruiting class that ranked No. 1 in America.

Right now for the class of 2021, the Bulldogs have two commitments for a class that currently ranks No. 24.

Those two commitments are pretty big, however. The headliner for this class is, and will continue to be, 5-star quarterback Brock Vandagriff (Bogart, Ga.), the No. 1 ranked quarterback and No. 8 player overall.

Accompanying Vandagriff as the only other commit in this class is 4-star defensive back David Daniel (Woodstock, Ga.). Daniel, who is recruited as a safety, is considered an athlete on 247Sports and ranks as the nation’s 45th player.

Until both Vandagriff and Daniel officially sign with Georgia roughly a year from now, Kirby Smart and staff will continue to recruit both of them heavily. But there’s still 20+ others guys that Smart will need to land a commitment from for the 2021 class, and we are taking a look at a few players that should be Georgia’s biggest targets.

These are defensive players only – we will have an offensive one as well.

Here are some of Georgia’s top defensive targets for 2021:

1. DB James Williams

Williams is a 5-star safety out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, an area that Georgia traditionally recruits very well.

Ranked as the No. 1 safety and No. 5 player in the entire class, Williams holds offers from just about everywhere, but Georgia is considered the favorite as of now according to 247Sports. Williams is a freak of nature at 6-5, 218 pounds. He’s projected to be a safety at the moment, but this guy is not done forming. He could very well end up as a linebacker.

2. DB Tony Grimes

Another 5-star defensive back, Tony Grimes (Virginia Beach, Va.) is the No. 1 cornerback in the country and the No. 10 overall player.

Grimes visited Georgia recently for junior day and it was supposedly a great visit. Georgia is very much in it for Grimes and right now the other two leaders appear to be Virginia Tech and Texas A&M.

3. DB Isaiah Johnson

Could Georgia land three 5-star defensive backs in the 2021 recruiting cycle?

Johnson ranks as a 5-star cornerback out of Bluefield, West Virginia. As the No. 25 overall player in his class, Johnson was recently in Athens with his friend Grimes and word is that Georgia is in good shape to possibly land him.

4. LB Barrett Carter

4-star linebacker Barrett Carter out of Suwanee’s North Gwinnett High School has kept relatively quiet regarding his preferences in potential college destinations, but he plans on delineating some of those preferences within the week.

In addition to receiving scholarship offers from LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, and literally every other school affiliated with the Southeastern Conference, Carter is a top target for perennial contenders Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, and Oregon.

The dynamic defender is currently predicted to enroll at Georgia and, following the recent departure of two 2021 Bulldog pledges, has the opportunity to become a leader in the class alongside Brock Vandagriff.

5. OLB Small Mondon

4-star outside linebacker Small Mondon ranks as the nation’s No. 37 overall player, No. 3 ranked OLB and No. 3 player in the state of Georgia.

Out of Paulding County High School, Mondon and Georgia coaches met in person three times in the month of January, including two visits paid by coaches and one trip to Athens.

Georgia offered the 6-foot-3 215-pounder who also played running back for his high school. Right now, it looks like Mondon is all Georgia, with the Dawgs in prime position to land him.

6. DE Quintin Somerville

Out of Scottsdale, Arizona, Somerville ranks as a 4-star strong side defensive end with heavy interest from Georgia’s staff.

If Georgia is able to land Somerville, he would be the second player in a row from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale to come to Georgia — 5-star CB Kelee Ringo, also out of Saguaro HS, committed to Georgia for 2020.

Somerville stands 6-3 and weighs 230 pounds. He and Ringo both visited Georgia recently and I’m sure Ringo will do his best to get Somerville to Athens.

He ranks as the 74th overall player in his class.
