Georgia’s defense dominates Missouri in win, but offense loses four to injury

The No. 6 ranked Georgia Bulldogs beat the Missouri Tigers in Sanford Stadium on Saturday night by a score of 27-0.

Georgia, which visits Auburn next weekend, moves to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.

The Dawgs’ defense came to play, shutting out the Tigers and their backup quarterback, Taylor Powell.

Georgia’s defense held Missouri to 198 total yards while Jake Fromm and the offense put up 339.

Fromm completed 13/29 passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and D’Andre Swift carried the ball 12 times for 83 yards.

The Georgia run defense proved again it is the best in America, holding Missouri to 50 rushing yards on 24 carries.

The final score should have been wider than what the scoreboard read, as the Bulldogs settled for five field goal attempts, with Rodrigo Blankenship knocking through four of them.

On offense, wide receiver Lawrence Cager was stealing the show in the first half but unfortunately went down with a shoulder injury just before halftime. He did not return, but finished the game with six catches for 93 yards.

With Cager sidelined, true freshman receiver George Pickens, who caught the game’s opening touchdown, stepped up. He ended up catching another one that was absolutely beautiful to give Georgia a 25-0 lead. Georgia would go for two and extend it to 27-0.

He also caught a 68 yarder in the fourth quarter but it was called back as he was lined too far off the line of scrimmage, giving Georgia an illegal formation penalty.

But the real story of the night, aside from the stellar defensive play, was the injuries to Cager and the offensive line. On the line, starting center Trey Hill, starting right tackle Isaiah Wilson and backup lineman Cade Mays all went down with injury.

Mays came in to replace the injured Hill at center. He was then replaced by Jamaree Salyer.

With Georgia traveling to Auburn next weekend in a must-win game for the Bulldogs if they wish to return to the College Football Playoff, this is not what you want to see. Auburn has arguably the country’s best defensive line, and Georgia will likely have a depleted offensive line Saturday on The Plains.

Kirby Smart will update the media this week on the injuries to these players.
