Democratic challenger and Baptist pastor Raphael Warnock has beaten Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler in the first of two Senate runoff elections in Georgia, with the second race going down to the wire.
Jon Ossoff, also a Democrat and a political documentarian, is leading David Perdue in the other race with 98 per cent of the count in, though a result may not come for a short while yet.
Earlier, state election officials said there had been record-level turnout for the two crucial runoff elections that could shift the balance of power in the US Senate from a Republican to a Democratic majority.
