Georgia QB Jake Fromm’s first career pick-6 gave South Carolina a stunning halftime lead

UPDATE: South Carolina upset Georgia, 20-17.

The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs didn’t get off to a great start against South Carolina on Saturday and entered halftime down, 17-10.

There were a number of reasons for that, including the Gamecocks blocking a 53-yard field goal as time ran out. But their No. 68-ranked defense also forced Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm to throw not only his first interception of the season, but it also turned into his first career pick-six, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Fromm was 14-for-23 for 129 yards in the first half, but on 2nd-and-4 with a minute left in the half, defensive back Israel Mukuamu picked him off and returned it for a 53-yard touchdown. It was just a bad pass when he should have thrown it away.

The Gamecocks entered the game as 24.5-point underdogs, and although Georgia outgained them, 230 yards to 156, and had twice as many first-half first downs, they had a surprising lead at the break — especially considering the most points they’ve scored in a game so far this season was in their 24-7 win over Kentucky two weeks ago.

Going into Week 7, the Bulldogs had a 46 percent chance to make the College Football Playoff as the second SEC team in the final four, along with Alabama. An upset would almost certainly put their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

With Georgia being such a heavy favorite in this SEC East matchup, college football Twitter was stunned by the halftime score.
