Georgia QB D’wan Mathis showing signs of a speedy recovery

It was a scary sight for the Mathis family and Dawg fans everywhere that Thursday night in May. Freshman Georgia quarterback D’wan Mathis was rushed to Piedmont Athens Regional hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to remove a cyst from his brain late this May.

Mathis was taken there for sinus pain he was experiencing, but after receiving an MRI, it was soon discovered he had the cyst.  He went into surgery that night and thankfully it went just as planned.

In an interview with the DawgNation, Mathis’ father Terence said, “I can’t tell you how thankful I am my son is at the University of Georgia. We were 745 miles away when all this happened last week, and Coach (Kirby) Smart made sure my son was taken care of the same way he would treat his own children.”

Mathis, the 6’4″ 200 lb freshman out of Belleville, Michigan, showed off some of his athleticism this spring at G-day. He got his first touchdown in a Bulldog jersey midway through the third quarter, but he wasn’t throwing the ball.  Team Black called a double reverse trick play as red-shirt sophomore Matt Landers hit Mathis in the corner of the end-zone for a 39 yard touchdown.

The four star QB flipped his commitment from Ohio State this past December, almost as a trade for Justin Fields if you will. Georgia has yet to implement a mobile, dual threat quarterback into their system, but with the succession of Fromm only getting closer, Mathis could win the job and be the right fit for the coming seasons.

Even with his surgery going smoothly, a brain operation is never something to take lightly. While on a trip to Smart’s house along with all the other newcomers this week, Mathis gave Georgia fans a huge sigh of relief after throwing down some nasty dunks in the coach’s driveway.

Mathis settled the nerves of many anxious Bulldog fans. Seeing him back in this form is truly an amazing sight and we hope to see him 100% come fall.
