The Georgia Ports Authority had a record-breaking year in 2023, moving an unprecedented number of automobiles across its docks in Brunswick. Meanwhile, goods shipped to Savannah in cargo containers experienced a decline of 16%.

The Port of Brunswick achieved an impressive milestone by rolling over 775,000 autos and heavy machinery units on and off ships throughout the year. This remarkable figure represents a remarkable increase of more than 15% compared to the previous year. The surge in auto shipments can be attributed to the significant increase in U.S. auto sales, which saw its most substantial growth in more than a decade.

Griff Lynch, the CEO of the Georgia Ports Authority, is resolute in his ambition to surpass the Port of Baltimore as the leading U.S. port for automobile imports and exports. To support this goal, the Georgia agency is investing a substantial $262 million in upgrades and expansions at the Brunswick port. Located approximately 70 miles south of Savannah, Brunswick's strategic location and ongoing enhancements make it a prime contender for becoming the top port for automobile trade.

Lynch stated in an interview that Brunswick has been the focus of continuous investments and efforts to create capacity. Looking ahead, there is potential for further growth in 2024. Lynch emphasized the strength of the automotive industry, highlighting its close tie to the overall state of the economy.

Last year witnessed a booming auto industry in Georgia, primarily due to the surge in sales resulting from pent-up demand caused by a computer chip shortage that affected assembly lines worldwide. Furthermore, Georgia's commitment to becoming a hub for electric vehicle (EV) production is expected to drive even more automotive traffic through Brunswick's docks in the coming years. Hyundai is constructing its first dedicated EV plant near Savannah, while Rivian, an electric truck manufacturer, is building a factory east of Atlanta. In addition, Kia announced plans to expand its plant in West Point to produce electric SUVs.

While the Port of Brunswick celebrates its remarkable success, the Port of Savannah experienced a notable decrease in cargo shipments handled in containers. Savannah, the nation's fourth-busiest seaport for containerized cargo, experienced a 16% decline in imports and exports compared to the previous calendar year.

According to Lynch, this slump in container traffic was largely due to retailers ordering less inventory as inflation and higher interest rates dampened consumer spending. However, there is reason for optimism, as Savannah's container numbers for January indicate a promising start to the year, potentially outpacing the same period in the previous year. Lynch expects this positive trend to continue in the coming months, expressing confidence that February, March, and April will yield strong year-over-year growth.

The Port of Savannah, trailing only New York, Los Angeles, and Long Beach, California, in terms of containerized cargo, remains poised for a comeback as the economy stabilizes and consumer spending rebounds. The port's significance as a crucial gateway for international trade and its strategic location make it a pivotal player in the global supply chain.

Overall, while the Port of Brunswick celebrates its record-breaking achievements in automotive trade and gears up for further expansion, the Port of Savannah looks forward to recovering and regaining its foothold as a leading container port. These developments are a testament to Georgia's role in facilitating global trade and its commitment to fostering economic growth in the region.
