Georgia places a key player on Athlon’s top 10 list

With Georgia in most of the college football publications preseason Top 5 rankings, Athlon Sports also has a Bulldog rated as one of the ten best players in the country.

Athlon has rising junior quarterback Jake Fromm ranked as the No. 6 overall best player in the country.

Fromm was pressed into the starting job as a freshman in 2017 and nearly guided the Bulldogs to a national championship. He took another step forward last fall, as Fromm tossed 30 touchdowns (up from 24) to six picks and completed 67.3 percent (up from 62.2) of his passes. With Fromm at the helm, Georgia is favored to win its third consecutive SEC East title in 2019.

The Houston County (Ga) High School alum is the 4th-ranked quarterback, behind Texas’s Sam Ehlinger (No. 5), Clemson rising sophomore Trevor Lawrence (No. 2) and at No. 1, Alabama Heisman Trophy runner-up Tua Tagovailoa.

The others on Athlons’ list are Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa at No. 10, Purdue wide receiver Rondale Moore at No. 9, Safety Grant Delpit of LSU at No. 8, quarterback Justin Herbert of Oregon and No. 7, Clemson running back Travis Etienne at No. 4 and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor at No. 3.
After leading Georgia to a 13-2 record, an SEC Championship and a trip to the National Championship game as a true freshman, Fromm came back with a strong sophomore campaign in leading the Dawgs to an SEC East title and Sugar Bowl appearance.
Fromm completed 207 of 307 passes in 2018 for 2,761 yards and 30 touchdowns. His 171.3 passer rating was No. 5 in the nation and is second among returning quarterbacks next season.
Georgia ends it’s 15 spring practices on April 20 with the annual G-Day game. The 2:00 p.m. game can be seen on the SEC Network.
