Georgia great Aaron Murray to start for Atlanta against an old foe

The Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football named former Georgia great Aaron Murray as the starter against the Memphis Express on Sunday.

Murray entered last week’s game in the first quarter after an injury to Matt Simms. He completed 20-of-33 passes for 254 yards and was the leading rusher with 54 yards. Murray led a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter that ended in a field goal that secured Atlanta’s first win in the new league.

Sunday’s game features a second  former Georgia quarterback as well. Zach Mettenberger was a highly-recruited prep from Oconee High who competed with Murray for the starting Bulldog position. Mettenberger was subsequently dismissed from the team and transferred to LSU.

The former teammates will face each other for the second time on the field.  The first was one of the most memorable games in Sanford Stadium history, when Murray led the No. 9 Bulldogs to a wild 44-41 victory over the No. 6 Tigers in 2013. Murray threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns, including the winning 25-yard score to Justin Scott-Wesley with 1:47 remaining.

Former Georgia defensive back Damian Swann and punter Cameron Nizialek also play for Atlanta.  Sunday’s game kicks off at 4p.m. at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta and will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
