The Florida Gators saw their College Football Playoff hopes be crushed in a heartbreaking defeat against the LSU Tigers. Florida’s pain is Georgia’s gain. Florida is one of Georgia’s top rivals and is having a great season. However, Florida’s dreams of winning a National Championship realistically ended following a 37-34 loss to the LSU Tigers.
The game featured thick fog. LSU forced several Florida turnovers. The Tigers had a few remarkable interceptions to spark their upset. The Tigers scored against Florida with relative ease, but they needed to break a 34-34 tie with under three minutes left in the game.
LSU quarterback Max Johnson played an excellent game and was forced to check the ball down to a wide open tight end on a third down in this last minute drive. His tight end got tackled several yards short of the first down and LSU was going to have to punt. Then, a Florida defensive back launched the tight end’s shoe twenty yards. The officials promptly gave Florida a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the rest is history.
LSU kicker Cade York nailed a 57 yard kick to give the Tigers a three-point lead. Kyle Trask and Florida fought back and missed a field goal as time expired.
The defeat makes the Georgia Bulldogs are co-SEC East champions (they won’t be headed to Atlanta) who are happy to see that their nemesis Florida isn’t making the College Football Playoff. Here’s how UGA football Twitter reacted to the upset loss for Florida:
