Georgia football: 2023 nonconference game canceled

There will be an unexpected opening in Georgia’s non-conference football schedule.

FCS school Indiana State and the Bulldogs have mutually agreed to cancel their 2023 game in Sanford Stadium, according to Marc Weiszer of OnlineAthens.

Indiana State approached UGA about cancelling the contest as Indiana State had the opportunity to play the Big 10’s Indiana in Bloomington. Georgia accommodated their request and neither team will be responsible for  any cancellation penalties.

With Georgia significantly upgrading the schedule with home-and-away series with Texas, UCLA, Florida State and Clemson, the open date may provide another opportunity to schedule a marquee program.

Georgia’s only 2023 non-conference game is now with Georgia Tech. Reports of a series with Oklahoma have been mentioned by several media outlets. This could possibly accelerate those discussions.

The only nonconference game currently on the Georgia schedule for 2023 is the annual game with Georgia Tech.

Coach Kirby Smart has been a big proponent of scheduling Power 5 teams. From a fan’s standpoint, beefing up the schedule would definitely be more attractive. In addition, the players want to be part of these big games and strength of schedule is a significant factor in determining the College Football Playoff teams.
