Georgia extends Athletic Director’s contract

The University of Georgia announced on Wednesday that athletic director Greg McGarity was given a one-year contract extension.

McGarity’s contract was to expire on June 30, 2019. The UGA  Athletic Association and president Jere Morehead extended McGarity’s contract until the end of the 2020 fiscal year. His previous contract called for a $575,000 annual salary.

McGarity started as the university’s athletic director on September 1, 2010 after Damon Evans’ resignation. Prior to his tenure at the University of Georgia, he was the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for the University of Florida. His tenure at UGA has been highlighted at UGA by dismissing former football coach Mark Richt and former basketball Mark Fox and replacing them with Kirby Smart and Tom Crean.

In addition, McGarity has overseen an historic upgrade of Georgia’s athletic facilities, including the construction of the $35 million indoor practice facility and the recent $175 million upgrades to Sanford Stadium

While at Georgia, McGarity has led an athletic department that’s budget leaped from  $77 million to $157 million in 2019, the sixth-most in the NCAA.

McGarity was a letterman of the Bulldogs men’s tennis team in 1973 and returned as a student assistant for five years after graduating.
