Georgia drops in ESPN’s updated FPI, chances to win SEC rise

ESPN has updates its Football Power Index following Saturday’s action, with two more games to go in Week 1 – one on Sunday and Monday.

Georgia, which opened the season ranked No. 3 in in the FPI, got things started with a 30-6 win in Nashville. Georgia was a 22 point favorite over the Commodores, an SEC East foe, and came away with a 24 point victory.

Following Saturday’s win, Georgia actually dropped to No. 4 in the rankings, compared to its No. 3 preseason spot. LSU, which was No. 4 in the preseason, switched places with Georgia after a 55-3 win over Georgia Southern.

Ahead of the season, the FPI gave the Dawgs over a 50% chance in each regular season game. Additionally, the system projected Georgia to go 10-2, with a 2.5% chance of winning out and a 27.1% chance of winning the conference.

In the updated FPI, Georgia still has over a 50% chance in each game. The 10-2 record projection remains the same as well, but its chances of winning out went from 2.5% to 5.3%. Once more, Georgia’s chance of winning the SEC went from 27.1% to 31.5%.

Georgia’s increased chance of winning the conference likely has to do with LSU’s increase as well. LSU, which started the season with a 12% chance to win the SEC, now has a 19% chance. Alabama’s 47% odds went down to 41%.
