Georgia Bulldog legend Herschel Walker weighs in on California’s NCAA bill

Georgia Bulldog legend Herschel Walker is no stranger to the bright lights of the college athletics stage. Walker won a Heisman trophy and a National Championship during his time in Athens. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that enables college athletes to hire agents and make money from endorsements this past week.

Herschel Walker could’ve made a ton of money off endorsements while he attended Georgia. Here’s his opinion on the matter:

It’s a topic of hot debate among former athletes and numerous others: should the NCAA allow college athletes to get compensated or not. On one hand a degree is valuable, but on the other side of the fence, the NCAA makes a ton of money off athletes. According to the USA Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert netted $2.9 million in the 2017.

If executives are paid so much for running an “amateur organization”, then why should athletes, who are sacrificing their bodies, be forced to attend a certain number of years at school before turning professional? Athletes like Zion Williamson and Trae Young could’ve made millions if they were professional. Both players’ games were constantly aired on ESPN throughout their one-year college careers.

Walker’s stance indicates that athletes should be compensated more. But how much more? There’s so many questions and not many easy answers.
