There are a couple of fights that could lure Georges St-Pierre out of retirement, but Nick Diaz isn’t one of them.
After Nate Diaz, defeated Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, he called out St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 21-2 UFC) during the ESPN+ post show, but for a rematch with his brother, Nick. But the way St-Pierre sees it, he doesn’t believe he’d have much to gain from a potential rematch.
“I don’t know what to say. He’s one of my biggest adversaries,” St-Pierre said in an interview with Chael Sonnen. “Even if we only fought once, we’re kind of very different personalities, and I think the clash of personalities makes it very interesting, but I’m retired now. I don’t want to go back and fight Nick Diaz. I wish him the best of luck in his pursuit of the title if that’s what he wanted to do. It’s not interesting for me. It has nothing I can gain from that. The risk is not worth the reward.”
St-Pierre defeated Diaz at UFC 158 via unanimous decision in a pretty lopsided fight in which he was able to out-grapple Diaz, defending his welterweight title for the eighth time. According to St-Pierre, another win over Diaz wouldn’t add anything to his legacy.
“It’s been done and not only that, even if it would have been done and it would be some sort of reward in terms of legacy or anything like that, there’s nothing good that can come out of it,” St-Pierre said. “Even if I win, I think the odds will favor me; people will make me the favorite for the fight. They will expect me to win, and if I lose it will be a complete disaster. I don’t want to put myself through another training camp, make all those sacrifices in terms of a three-month training camp for that type of fight. It’s not interesting. It’s not worth it for me.”
And while Diaz might hold a grudge against St-Pierre for the rest of time, GSP just doesn’t feel the same way. He says he really doesn’t have an issue with Diaz.
“I think this guy is going to hate me until the day I die,” St- Pierre said with a laugh. “I know he doesn’t like me, and he look to get me all the time. But, man, I generally like the guy. I’m telling you the truth. If I would see him in a situation of trouble, and I would be the only person that could help him, I would go help him, and I don’t think it would be the other way around.”
