George Zimmerman wounded in Florida shooting incident

George Zimmerman was able to walk ‘normally into the ambulance’ after being wounded in a shooting on Monday.

George Zimmerman was involved in a shooting incident in Florida on Monday afternoon, police say.

Zimmerman, who became infamous for shooting dead 17-year-old Trayvon Martin while on a security patrol of a housing complex in 2012, was reportedly slightly wounded in the latest incident.

Don West, an attorney for Zimmerman, told the Associated Press that a bullet missed Zimmerman’s head and he was sprayed with glass from his vehicle’s windshield.

The shooting happened in Lake Mary, Florida, on the outskirts of Orlando, at around 12.45pm local time, according to Lake Mary’s police chief, Steve Bracknell.

A news station helicopter shot reportedly shows a bullet hole in the passenger window of a vehicle Zimmerman was in.

The shooting may have been related to an “ongoing dispute” between Zimmerman and another person, according to Bracknell.

An ambulance was called for Zimmerman after he suffered a slight wound.

“He walked normally into the ambulance, so he wasn’t being helped or nothing,” an eyewitness, Richardo Berrare, said, according to local TV.

Zimmerman has been involved in a string of events in the last three years, after first coming to widespread attention in 2012 when he killed Martin.

Zimmerman was acquitted of manslaughter by reason of self-defence in his trial for Martin’s death in July 2013.

In February 2015, the Department of Justice closed their investigation into that incident and reported that they would not pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman over the death of Martin.

In January 2015, prosecutors dropped charges in a domestic violence case after his girlfriend retracted allegations that he assaulted her. He had previously been arrested in another domestic violence case in November 2013, where charges also ultimately were not filed.
