George Square to be pedestrianised as part of multi-million pound improvement plan

The heart of Glasgow is set to be pedestrianised after the council green lit a new multi-million pound improvement plan.

Part of George Square will not be accessible to vehicles anymore in a bid to reduce congestion in the city centre.

The project, which is estimated to cost the council £8million - £10million, envisages a new layout of the area - including the removal of parking.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We can now begin work on the redevelopment of George Square to deliver the changes that the people of Glasgow have told us they want.

"Throughout this process, we will continue to engage with everyone with a stake in the square to create a civic space we can all enjoy and be proud of.”

The new layout will involve a pedestrians only section on the shorter east and west sides of the square, while public transport and cyclists will be able to access the longer sides on the north and south.

The proposals were agreed today by Glasgow City Council following the findings of a recent city-wide public consultation on the future use and design of the city centre square.

The Public Conversation about George Square received 2,267 submissions in October and November last year.

The consultation suggested people feel that change is required at George Square, while respecting its history and the aspects of the square that remain valued.

Key themes of the findings from the Public Conversation included a reduction in traffic or an element of pedestrianisation; more sustainable/green space; places to sit and relax; a mixed response to statues (ranging from retained, altered in layout and removed to new statues, cleaning and conservation); and a water feature, fountain or pond.

The estimated cost for the proposed George Square works is between £8million - £10million, with the proposed works at Hanover Street and Miller Street estimated at £2 - £3million.  These costs will be met from existing capital budgets, including the Glasgow City Region City Deal.T

Today’s approval means that the traffic plan for George Square will be developed as part of the emerging City Centre Transport Strategy, and the statutory process on a new traffic layout to be delivered before the European Championships in June 2020 will begin.
