George Shelley's new song about grief following sister's death is breaking fans' hearts

Former Union J star George Shelley has released a new single - his first in several years - about grief and loss following the sudden death of his sister in 2017.

George, who is from Clevedon, has shared the song and lyric video on Instagram and fans have expressed how the lyrics are pulling on their heartstrings.

George, who rose to fame on the X Factor, has spoken previously about the loss of sister Harriet who died eight days after being hit by a car and then hitting her head on the pavement outside a Stormzy gig in Bristol.

"Because Harriet was such a big character and was so funny and happy all the time, when we lost her there was this massive void all the time. It will never be filled. We just have to learn how to live with that void," he said.

"I have so many favourite memories of her. She was so much like me when it comes to relationships. That was something we bonded over so quickly, when I told her I was gay and when we started talking about boys, it opened up a whole new thing for us."

Speaking to The Mirror, the former Kings of Wessex Academy and Weston College student struggled to hold back tears as he recalled how 21-year-old Harriet was planning to join him in London after graduating from Birmingham University with a first-class degree in midwifery.

"Our outlook on life was the same, we were like the same person. We were like twins, we spent every day of our lives together. She was moving in with me, we'd planned our lives together," he said.

"It's so hard to talk about."

It makes the lyrics of his new single even more poignant.

Posting on Instagram George Shelley describes the song, Lose to Find, as something which helped him come to terms with the emotions and the relationship he had with grief.

He said: "These lyrics, throughout moments of sadness and deep sorrow, always reminded me to keep on going and offered solace in periods of impossibilities. My hope is that it gives council to anybody who is struggling to deal with their trauma, anybody in parallel situations and anyone struggling to connect with their own hurt."

One fan, named ifyouseemeg, commented: "Thankyou for writing something so beautiful and raw that will help so many people including myself. In some of the hardest years we’ve all ever experienced, light and love like this is exactly what we need."

Lose to Find is available to buy and stream now on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes.
