George North sent off for 'dangerous' Ashton Hewitt incident after just 14 minutes of Ospreys' draw with Dragons

Wales and Ospreys winger George North was sent off less than 15 minutes into his region's first game for more than five months.

North scored an early try to give his side the lead over the Dragons but was then dismissed for a dangerous tackle in the air on Ashton Hewitt during the 20-20 draw. You can read the full match report here.

New Guinness PRO14 ref Adam Jones had little choice but to reach for the red after Hewitt was taken out.

The wing was attempting to collect a restart after he'd scored a try to get the Dragons back in the game.

North had chased the restart but got his timing all wrong as he collided with the airborne Hewitt, who spun in the air and crashed to the ground on his neck.

Fortunately, Hewitt didn't suffer any lasting effects. But, by the letter of the law, Jones had to brandish North a red card.

It's thought to be the first time the lethal try-scorer has been sent off in his senior career.

North was quick to hold his hands up and check on Hewitt's well-being as referee Jones conferred with his TMO.

New Ospreys coach Toby Booth said after the match: "It didn’t matter what I made of it.

"George is disappointed and has apologised to the team. Everyone knows he is not a malicious guy but by the letter of the law, the referee and the TMO came to a decision.

Dragons director of rugby Dean Ryan chipped in: "It was pretty obvious.

"I always feel for somebody in that situation because I don’t know what I would do but, in terms of law, it was a red card.

"I don’t think it needs any further debate. It was a shame."
