George North lies motionless as sickening moment sparks concern during Wales v France Six Nations match

George North appeared to be knocked unconscious early on in Wales' Six Nations clash with France on Saturday after a collision with Gael Fickou.

Just after the 10-minute mark, Dan Biggar tried a crosskick in North's direction, but Fickou’s elbow crashed into the Wales wing’s head as they both looked to gather the ball.

The nasty knock saw North hit the turf before lying motionless on the pitch as Welsh medics rushed to his assistance. North appeared to regain consciousness after a few seconds, just before he was tended to.

Johnny McNicholl was brought on as a replacement, and it was confirmed shortly afterwards North would not be returning to the field.

North has previously experienced several bouts of concussion, suffering four head injuries in the space of five months between November 2014 and March 2015.

The Wales and Lions wing later took five months out of the game in 2015. His then girlfriend Becky James, now married to the rugby star, later revealed his speech had even been affected in the aftermath.

In 2016, a further incident sparked a major row and investigation after North appeared to be knocked unconscious following a mid-air collision while on duty for Northampton. He was allowed to return to play despite his history of head injuries, with World Rugby later concluding North should never have returned to the field of play that night.

Speaking after the defeat, Wales boss Wayne Pivac said: "George North will go through the HIA protocols - he was taken off for a HIA."
